Where allotment gardeners see a little patch of heaven, property developers see £££ signs. Lia Leendertz reports on the growing trend to redevelop inner-city plots.
Parts of Philadelphia are now characterized by the presence of this empty space; there are 40,000 vacant lots, many of which are in Philadelphia's poorest neighborhoods. However, rising from this rubble of failed corporate policies and economic depression may be a new movement called Occupy Vacant Lots, which is turning these lots into organic gardens and green spaces that breathe life into Philadelphia's horticultural past, while growing fresh, local produce to nourish its future.

It took over 20 years of gardening to realize that I didn’t have to work so hard to achieve a fruitful harvest. As the limitless energy of my youth gradually gave way to the physical realities of mid-life, the slow accretion of experience eventually led to an awareness that less work can result in greater crop yields.

More than half a million olive trees have been uprooted or destroyed by Israeli civil and military forces in the past 10 years, according to the Palestinian ministry of agriculture, while the fates of hundreds of farming communities are tied to the humble plant - a tree renowned for its symbolism since before the time of Noah. The Palestinians' largely agricultural economy has traditionally been dependent on its harvest - olive oil, soap, lamp fuel - let alone the fruit itself - as well as the olive wood Nativity carvings sold to tourists in Bethlehem's old city - they have all been central to the Palestinian economy for hundreds of years.
Pure awesome.
Happy somewhat-belated New Year to all you cyberweirdos... and a special Harpy Jew Year to Biggles and all the other moneygrubbing fascist manc jews of the world. I raise a pint of melon juice to you, in my glorious state of hung-over-as-fuck, and share with you a love song that instantaneously reminded me of TAN. This prettymuch marks a year since I joined TAN as well, so thanks for 365ish days of lulz, rage, and everything in between. Mostly lulz. May 2011 be the year you all pickle your livers, bake your brains, and continue entertaining me (and yourselves) daily. Oh, except Tuoni and Nova. Tutu, since you're X5up3rX5tr8X3dg3X, may 2011 be the year you get some hormone treatments or something that makes you less of a freak. ... and Nova, may 2011 be the year you get hit by a bus running from several K9 dogs. LOVE LOVE, LOVE LOVE LOVE. xx
