So I guess people think the USA civil war was ages ago. In reality it was under 200 years. Some of us forget what came before. This is why I feel that Wolffe has good points aboot citizens bearing arms. We can't just give up and think that we are living in a Utopia. Things can change fast. I am a supporter of armed, responsible citizens. I myself will not obtain a gun as I feel I am too unstable at the moment, but I don't think the government deserves or needs a monopoly on physical violence. Monopolies are bad always. A recent visit to the civil war battlefield at Gettysburg Pennsylvania has me thinking about the way landscapes are able to contain memory, how they are able to preserve and convey past events. The idea of preserving the battlefield as a memorial to the fallen soldiers is an appropriate one. But does the landscape itself tell us anything about those distant events?
