UFC 137
Nick Diaz v B.J. Penn
Nick Diaz is my favorite UFC type fighter – he’s an absolute beast...plus, he works himself up to a mental state of absolute Bad Ass before the fight – and since he is a total bad ass, I don’t envy anyone who has to face him across the octagon - - or God help you, gives him any shit in a bar; kicks sand in his face at the beach; or gets caught fucking his girlfriend. I recall several years ago, the news reports that Diaz continued a fight at the hospital…Nick, it seems, takes shit from no one – therefore, I like him.
Penn is no slouch himself, having been a UFC champion in two weight divisions. Penn is known as a sharp, accurate and hard hitting striker, and I’ve seen him (when he was in top shape) absolutely destroy some upper level fighters on the ground; like he was toying with them; and also bloody them up with his fists. Notable Penn dominations include: Diego Sanchez, Kenny Florian, Joe Stevenson and Matt Hughes.
So, last night, in round one, throwing hands was pretty even, Diaz getting started slowly – Penn actually took Diaz down, but Diaz is not just good on the ground – he is outstanding! Diaz has never been submitted on the ground, not even close – I have seen some of the best ground-fighters with a look of astonishment on their faces when he ‘rolled’ with them. Anyway, Penn tried to take Nick’s back and immediately Nick rolled and countered…I think that at that point, Penn ‘knew’ that as good as he (Penn) was on the ground, there was no way he was going to be able to dominate Nick Diaz on the ground - - and in fact, this was the only ‘ground’ action of the fight.
Round two: Nick was warmed up and had his mental attitude adjusted to a level of ‘Pissed the Fuck Off’ and commenced to go after Penn with his fists. Nick delivered a second-round ass whipping to Penn the likes of which Penn had never been subjected…even the announcers commented on the beating Penn took – no one had ever beaten him like that before. Punches coming to the head and body singly and in combination. I think pride alone kept Penn up. He was staggered, stumbling and retreating around the ring – but did take the ass beating like a man. A definite 2-point round for Nick.
Round three: Penn tried to come back, but Nick Diaz was having none of it, he continued hammering Penn – but not as badly as in round two, but still a decisive round for Diaz
Decision to Nick Diaz.
Post fight: Penn was so beaten that he announced his retirement to interviewer Joe Rogan; Penn adding that he had one daughter and another on the way, and didn’t need to, “Go home looking like this.”
Meanwhile, Nick Diaz, now having a full ‘fighting mood, pissed the fuck-off’ thing going on, announced that St. Pierre, the champ wasn’t ‘injured’ but just scared to fight him… Which, if he isn’t, he damn well should be – because Diaz is one mean motherfucker in a fight – and a hell of an athlete…if that fight happens, I’m sure as hell gonna buy that one, too. BTW, to the best of my knowledge, St. Pierre and Wolffe are the only two non-pussy Canadians… heh heh.
GSP was supposed to fight Diaz, but Diaz skipped a news conference so White took him out of the championship fight - - I believe Diaz when he claims his thing is fighting, not being a TV performer...
Anyway, then Diaz was scheduled to fight Penn instead, and GSP to fight ? (brain fart), THEN GSP dropped out with a claim of an injury.
I was REALLY looking forward to Diaz fighting GSP - as there is NO WAY GSP could do to Diaz, what he did to Koschek - and no way he could submit Diaz on the ground - I think Diaz would beat GSP over five rounds, and likely knock him out.

Diaz never fought matt hughs but that would have been interesting. I wasn't overly impressed with this fight, too much hand holding at the start then the stand up punching game in round two seemed to lack energy. By 2 minutes in Diaz looked tired to me.
I stopped watching after UFC 65 when I cancelled sky but Penn probably beat hughes more than any other fighter but he looked out of shape here, lethargic.
Diaz looked seriously roughed up by the start of round 3, penn looked sore too but I think they both gave as good as they got.
I watched UFC 140 or something months ago with that mackenzie guy and the mackenzietine?? wtf was that all about, was that a joke?
