Seeing as how we now have at least two regular features in the form of Holley's Sex Column and Mog's I Saw A Movie! review section, I thought I'd take a break from ill conceived, sub-student, idealistic political polemics and throw my hat in the ring with a music reviews column. Kicking off with my Top Ten Albums of 2011.
DISCLAIMER
Before anyone jumps in with a complaint about the shocking absence of FelchQueef, Colostoscope or DJ Douche and the Fucking Ultracunts I'd just like to point out that this is not in anyway an objective list of the best albums of 2011. There may have (objectively speaking) been better albums released in the last 12 months but I didn't listen to every album released last year; this is simply a list of the ten albums I happened to listen to the most. OK? 10. CSS- La Liberación
Underated third album from the Brazillian electro-pop ensemble.
Noticeably absent from many critics end of year round up, the Brighton collectives third outing is a fantastic mash of feel good party tunes and old fashioned pop music. Simply unmissable.
Unashamadely retro girl-pop trio. Nothing ambitious or even particularly original; just luscious harmonies and finely crafted pop tunes. Do we really need much more than that?
Following on from what was easily their most accessible record in a decade, 2007s In Rainbows, Oxfordshire's most downbeat export returned 2011 another marmite offering of dense, impentrable electronica and expirementation. The inevitable mixed reviews followed but I'd still rank this as one of the finest musical offering of the 21st century.
I must admit I really didn't think much of this Southend five-piece when they first emerged in 2007. They struck me as a bit of a novelty act, typical of the sort of art school trendy nonsense the NME were heavily promoting at the time (incidentally this was around the time I stopped reading that god- awful rag). Revisiting their 2007 debut Strange House with less cynical ears, I hear flashes of brilliance but it's largely an unsophisticated mess. Which is why their second album, 2009s Mercury nominated Primary Colours, was such a pleasant surprise (if you haven't heard it, I strongly recommend).
This, their third effort doesn't disappoint. This is the sound of a band maturing into brilliance, creating a dense atmospheric soundscape stiking the perfect balance between epic layered synth symphonies and post-punk restraint. An absolute masterpiece.
the bandana splits or the pipettes(1)? my vote goes to the pipettes(2)! yes, they're not 2011, just ranked within ze genre!
also, i was planning on expanding on my concept with an "i heard some music!" update occasionally, and i'll probably test that one out as well too, cos i don't really think the chances of us overlapping is too great, and even if that was the case, there'd be comparative thoughts of the same pieces of music!~
my best of 2011 was, as have been since 2009, was between the buried and me - colors (320kbps mp3, torrent) !~ yes, there hasn't been released music this year that was better than last year's best album, and the year before that either. colors was even released in 07, i think, but i didn't get much into BTBAM until the spring of 09.
okay, 2011 releases only, les-see...!~~~~~ vnv nation - automatic was quite good! machine head's unto the locust was pretty meh. the blackening is still their best album yet, in my book at least!
Great blog pablo. Might check out a few of these. I thought the Beastie Boys album was great too, but you missed two of their killer tracks. will chuck em in my copycat blog
