it's been a while now, for a few reasons! i've not watched any movies lately, nor found any interesting ones, and i've been working for a good bit. but now i bring you another installment of my movie reviews! this time it's gone in sixty seconds!
the movie posters i found were either dumb, tagged, foreign or all of the above!imdb - 6.4
what's it about?a crew of insurance people lead double lives as car thieves. a druglord from south america pays them a decent amount of money to steal 48 cars. shit hits the fan when the police receives a phone call from an insider about one certain 1973 mustang, the last of the 48 is about to be stolen! there isn't much more to the movie than this, other than the shit i'll be elaborating over later!
so, what's mog's thoughts?well, i figured it couldn't possibly be worse than the 2000 one with the lousy nicolas cage in it. why? cos i like 70s movies more than nicolas cage movies! it isn't a proper reason, i know, but there is something about the 70s i really do like, and there is something about mr. cage i don't like, so that would be the reason.
anyway, the dialogue is stale and poorly delivered to the point of campy, but luckily there isn't too much of it. some of it is delivered through voiceovers which spare us the ludicrous acting!~ they spend some time setting up the premise, and then start stealing cars. this part is still more memorable than the 2000 movie! it doesn't feel too genuine, but neither did the remake.
among the characters is the token woman and black guy. the rest of them are what you picture insurance people to be, altho with a cool edge. white, 40s men. the woman is pretty cool and stuff if you dig the 70s vibe, which i do a whole lot!
the only female in the ensemble! proper 70s woman! groovy!still, what makes this movie is the car chase. i won't reveal too much, but i'll say this: it is the, -THE- best car chase i've ever seen in a movie! it's so good it even has some of the vibe of the getaway in stockholm movies! and the amount of cars crashed or totalled is mind boggling! what's part in making it proper is the cut-ins, of which there are two kinds: 1. the radio people interviewing people who witnessed the madness, and 2. the victims of the car chase, collisions and what not, being attended to by police, bystanders, firetrucks and all that -- sort of a consequence part to the insanity, sort of to balance the whole thing out. it is a counterweight to romanticising car chases.
the car chase alone is well worth watching, and at times it feels like it's never ending! also, seeing 60s/70s american cars drive like that is hilarious if you're some sort of car geek. but there are times (if you are one of us car nerds) you have to suspend belief to keep up with the movie. among them smashing into a light post, front corner first, and still be able to drive away! i don't give a flying fuck tho, a minute later i was properly entranced again by the thrill!~
some trading of paint do occur!what's also annoyed me as a car geek is the part about speeding up the film to make it seem faster than it is, but it was for the very most part executed very well in this one!
so, mog, what's your rating on this?while the movie itself has clear cut weak and strong points, it's overall a properly decent movie seen with 70s eyes.
acting: 1yes, i give it a one, cos it was a bit hard to decide if it was just campy (involuntarily funny) or just plain bad. but still, somewhat lifeless, stale and poor acting all included, it didn't annoy me to the point of aggression, nor make me laugh at their poor delivery! they were sort of extremes that averaged each other out, to the point of receiving 1 point above total neutral!~
directing: 140it had proper pacing, nice actiony camera angles, proper sets, nice flow through scene changes, kept increasing the tension in me proportionally; excitement levels slowly, but smoothly rising until the final car chase started, when the movie went stellar excitementwise!
car chase: top mark!~the undefined top mark is given to this one! this beats every other car chases i've ever seen in any movies, from Steve McQueen's
Bullitt, to
Ronin,
Vanishing Point and the french
Taxi movies! by far too! sweet mercy and by everything i hold holy, this was a proper car chase! i suppose you'll get the most out of it if you're -both- easily sold on exciting moments in movies as well as cars! it might not be top marks for those of you who don't like both of those on a level far above average! some might say too long, others too unbelieveable and whatnot, but in my book it was perfect! the cut-ins and everything, the music, etc! i'm baffled!
overall: 6000! i like that number! comparably i gave it 8 stars on imdb.
8 stars for a few reasons: i like 70s movies, i like cars and car chases, i love 70s soundtracks, and i like a bit of a campy feel to movies! the soundtrack was a bit more jam rock-y than the lalo schifrin kind of dirty harry movies and others (bigband), but it had the very same vibe to it! sweet shit, what an awesome movie this was! it is to be noted that i finished watching it about 15-20 minutes ago, so much of the car chase is still boiling in my system!
and like i've said earlier about other movies, this movie might not be for you unless you like cars and/or car chases, or if you don't have any kind of relationship to 70s cinema!
any requests or suggestions for anything i should review is appreciated, but not necessarily acted upon!~

Mog, they are not 70s but very close, what do you think of the cannonball run movies?

You've got to admit though, Travolta was the star in that movie

That would actually be the perfect role for his style and smile/look, he just knew he wouldn't get any leading roles as the bad arms dealer.
It's too bad hollywood didn't value his chops properly, or we wouldn't have been forced to go through nicolas cage doing the exact same role from every movie he was in made after 1988.

funnier than cock and tits humor too ..!~ i will admit, i don't laugh out loud much of the movies, cos the jokes are 50 years old and all that, but entertainmentwise i'm not bored! gots to love jaws in a little mitsubishi colt !
about nicholas cage i feel that he had his prime with the mid/late 90s/early 00s movies like the rock, the 60 seconds remake, con air, face-off and all that, but the movies comníng after these one realised that he in fact had a very limited acting range. it's the hurtful screaming, bad cop attitude, looks like he's drunk when he's threatening people (which is a very good chance he was), damaged goods kind of actor. he isn't handsome, so he won't win on that, he isn't buff and muscular, so he won't win on that, he has no cult following aside from his latest junk which only the die hard fans can appreciate and all that.
i did however watch a 2009/10/11 movie of his some 6 months ago (ed. note: drive angry, 2011) which was both seriously B cinema and hilarious B cinema at the same time. the special effects were so shitty they probably downscaled them by choice to make it hilarious. it was about him protecting some woman or something after he incidentally ran in on her and the husband disputing, and ended up saving her (ed. note: another woman, with the first one as a sidekick) from some devil worshipping cult. that made me realise i can only appreciate him in shitty movies, cos he'd be more likely to be one of the best parts of it, instead of being the lead in a proper movie and end up disliking it cos he couldn't deliver !
also, proofinlife, did you not watch lord of war?
lastly, very much agreed on the fairly bad looks of the second gen mustang. it does have the disadvantage of being the hard followup release of an awesome first gen (esp. the facelifted 67-69) mustang!
very lastly a fun fact: the man who wrote, directed and starred in the movie also drove the mustang himself throughout the chase!
