there's a first for everything, and this first is about a movie straight outta the cinema! it is one i have been waiting for ever since i first saw the first single image concept art back in the mid 00s.
imdb - 8.0 atm, account for fluctuations for when it's shown elsewhere.
what's it about?the premise is simple: german nazis escaped to the moon, and 2018 they're coming back with their fourth reich invasion fleet. while we all already knew this, there was another layer/message to the movie as well, which i will not reveal, cos i hate reading spoilers myself.
the president is looking to get re-elected, and sends two men to the moon, an astronaut and an afro-american model. there is the landing of the craft, and then the movie moves into full gear.
the germans speak german, so i suppose some subtitles are to be expected.
the concept image they made many moons ago, only it didn't have the caption below!so, what's mog's thoughts?well, i shared on the spacebook that this might be "the movie of the year (decade?)", but that's much because i'm a sucker for the core team's last movie,
Star Wreck, and also the style and roles they've created for this one. lots of nods to recent pop culture, tv shows as well as movies, which added a whole lot to people who are into proper sci-fi. some nods also outside the inner sci-fi circle as well.
i've waited a long time, as mentioned, for this one, and with time comes expectations! they were all met, and even a few times the movie managed to surprise me as well! very much a plus in the book for not straying down the hollywood ladder, and also in keeping their unique finnish approach to the movie. it was noticeable that it was the same people who made
Star Wreck, which in my book is also a very good thing.
at times the audience were roaring, and every now and then you could hear people laughing of the different pop culture nods, some which even i didn't catch!
i'll tell you this: if you do like spaceships, you are in for a proper treat!~~
so, mog, what's your rating on this?i know i am fairly biased, but judging by the crowd's reaction, my bias doesn't detract from the experience in any major way.
spaceships: over 9000i love space ship-y stuff! because of spoiler reasons i won't go into it too much, but it set up for something great, but the entire sequence was a tad too short. i will say no more - the score speaks for itself!
characters: ~9000while the dialogue was good, and none of the characters seemed out of place for a finnish sci-fi action comedy, there somehow isn't an over 9000 or top mark for them either. i just can't put my finger properly on what's fogging this one up a bit either. but still, i've seen world renowned movies from the very elite of movie history with more annoying characters. no jarjar binks or anything in this one tho! it might be that a support or something somewhere didn't deliver top notch. but i don't care, this is a 7 something million euro movie!~ no characters pulled me out of the movie, and the entire cast did a properly good job anyways!
many laughs were had of the UN board of representatives or whatevs they be called!
pacing: top mark!~this movie had a fairly short introduction, and characters were introduced alongside the movie's progression, if one can put it like that! while it didn't move along very fast to begin with, it never really slowed down! to move a little bit out of the pacing part, i can say it was almost perfect lengthwise too! if anything, it was only a few minutes short, and the only reason for that is mentioned above with the spaceship part !
overall: far above 9000! another one of mog's lifetime favourites!
ten stars on imdb! if you're a rating nerd on imdb, chances are you have a bit higher requirements for a ten star movie on there! seeing another person's review of it, giving it 9 stars while raving about the movie tells me i'm not far off anyway! whenever it is released you ought to spend the few monies it costs, even if you are on ze dole!~
if you're a dumbass and wait until it hits the torrents, at least make it a release without the cinema crowd, cos everything from occasional small laughs from different corners all the way up to a full room roaring is to be expected!~
lastly, which seems to be a part of my reviews now, this movie isn't for you if you don't like funny stuff and/or spaceships, sci-fi awinesginarg i don't care. you'll probably like bits of it anyways!
any requests or suggestions for anything i should review is appreciated, but not necessarily acted upon!~
n. mog
