Why the fuck did tonsils evolve at all? They are useless. Tonsillitis is painful. And it could get really disgusting when it's filled with tonsil stones (tonsillolith). Useless glands, I can't even use them to poison anyone :(...
Tonsils are lymphatic tissue part of the immune system, and are an important part of the nasal and oral system of defence. This is why tonsillectomy is nowadays used mostly in severe and/or chronic cases, as removing your tonsils actually suppresses your immune system.
They are as immunocompetent as the appendix. Now if they had a similar role like the spleen, now they'd be something. Other than that, you know where I stand.
I had my tonsils removed at four, and I can proudly say I've had a small fraction of the nasal and throat infections that people with tonsils have (last throat infection was over 5 years ago and nasal infection 2 years ago), so i dunno just how much of a wrench that throws in your gearbox, Tuoni. I'd say they are pretty damned useless if getting rid of them makes my life a little better than those with, if not perilous.

i used to get those tonsilollololololiths as a kid. i'd cough them out at inconvenient times. one time at soccer practice i gagged one up the size of a molar. sick.
they bothered me enough that the doc took out my tonsils. wham, bam, thank you ma'am. i don't get sick very often. maybe i will later in life. i don't know. what i DO know is that i don't miss my tonsils. ONE BIT.
G-ROSS!! I am so glad we got my daughters tonsils out last year. The doctor said that once the tonsils go into overdrive making those disgusting rocks, they won't stop. It was giving her horrible stomach problems. He said she had one of the worst cases he has seen. When he cut them open, hundreds of those tonsil stones poured out. ICK!!!
Kinda pisses me off that our family doctor didn't know what they were. Just said it was skin... She suffered longer than necessary. We were so sick of her being sick, we asked to see a specialist.
