The legalization of marijuana won't happen as long as logging for wood/paper is still occurring. The pulp out of a hemp or marijuana plant is nearly 10 times as dense as the pulp in a tree, and with far less stock you could produce just as much paper. That's who was afraid of it back in the 40's and 50's, and to this day, they are a major player in keeping marijuana illegal. Lobbyists.... those that fuck the world every day.
It's my dream for it to be legal, even if I don't smoke it by that point (which I'm thinking about making some major life changes, pot being one of them), the amount of taxes sold off marijuana alone could pay off nation's debts. It's just ridiculous what's happening in america over it, they could have bailed out the banks with drug money, not taxes. Hell, if marijuana was legal 20 years ago, the recession might not have happened! I'll go so far as to say that.

Back on track, it would do for marijuana what ending of prohibition did for booze. There were legal vendors everywhere and the government made a pretty penny taxing the living shit out of it.
Even if marijuana was taxed, say at 25% (instead of 180 for an ounce it 216 or 220), people will feel more comfortable walking into a vendor, or wherever they sell it, and buy it legally in the open from a licensed sales store, than going to a bootlegger and still have the risk of being fined for buying bootlegged items. Sure, the bootleggers/dealers might have the exotic shit that gets you high, but if you have one of those guys that make you wait hours or are hard to get ahold of, you could just saunter on over to a counter at a store and grab a bag, no problems.
