In the last 30 days alone I've seen probably a dozen instances that I'm sure you have all seen. Cops cruising along when they turn their lights on to blow through red lights, only to turn off the lights once he exits the intersection. I even seen one cop who stopped all traffic in a very busy intersection during rush hour (97th Street & 118th ave), to do a u-turn cutting inbetween cars who were trying to turn and then turning his lights off and continuing at normal speed.
What can even be done about this?
I view this is as a huge disrespect to fellow citizens because the cops (who are civilians btw) basically think they are above "average citizens". Everytime I see this happen it makes me want to speed up to him and pull HIM over.
Please do not try and justify cops doing this as I know some TAN members will. Is their job hard? Yes. But they chose to do that job and they can quit at any time.
Being a cop does not grant you extra rights or privileges.
When a cop puts on his lights he is declaring an emergency and fraudulently putting them on in a non-emergency is illegal.
People who watch this stuff go on do nothing about it because they are scared they will be fined, ticketed or arrested. I just don't care anymore.

Write down the license plate, get the car's ID numbers located both on each fender above the wheel well and on the trunk lid/door, with the time of date, and exactly what you saw happen and where it happened. There will be an internal investigation and if he gets enough complaints about the same thing he will have his priveleges revoked to drive a police vehicle and/or license penalties, limiting him to lower wages and desk work, or no job depending on availability.
I personally know two ex-cops who were dismissed for this very thing, laughing every time a complain was lodged against them for burning through red's with their lights on only to turn them off.
If the cop knows it was you and decides to pull douche bag and pull you over for doing nothing, pull out the warrant clause and mention justification. If the officer cannot give you a clear answer or is obviously lying (saying you were speeding after repeated requests for you to prove it via speedgun), you have the right to inform the officer that unless they can provide justification and/or have a warrant to search your vehicle, you have the right to drive away, and they cannot hold you. If they tell you stay put inform the officer you are calling a lawyer because you can charge the fuck and sue for illegally holding you.
