http://madhatter.tk/So, I've set up a barebones "shitty phpbb forum or w/e they are" of which there apparently already are millions out there. In case Biggles really does full-scale rage-quit and "kuwait teh intahnetz 4eva" and go on a big gay adventure with Algy and Ginger down under, then at least there's something other than ... *shiver* digg or reddit. Nothing amazing, but it's better than nothing, and a fuckload better than digg.
Still not all set up with the rules, faq, and so on, but it's pretty much the same as TAN, but I'll write something a little more detailed: basic rules, what is safe/unsafe, what mods/admins can do and when, etc. Rules that are good to have written down just in case. It also has very basic forums, if you want more you'll need to come up with some ideas, what you want, what could be useful, etc. This isn't a one-sided affair

Anyway, it's supposed to be a backup and emergency plan, so for now it's maybe a little unnecessary to try and make a full set of forums equivalent to TAN.
Registration is open but requires a working email, I highly suggest you use something anonymised, gmx, hushmail, yahoo, google, whatever.
I did think of a few other names, like Pinky, tiTANic, or something — something appropriate for the crazies of TAN — not that it's set it stone or anything. Dot.tk domains are free, so it's easy to change.
Hopefully Biggles isn't as Tory as he says he is, and TAN will go on for at least another 6 months.
The GatesStrictly "site" oriented, discussion about the site and any alternative development, issues, reports, and so on.
The AsylumStrictly "safe," if you're lazy or just don't like to keep your topic clean, simply post in the Shack.
The ShackNo restraint jackets. Beware the flasher. I'm not responsible for any subsequent mental trauma.
I haven't forgotten that post you did a while back about how to censor people.

I would've thought it has the same freedoms as TAN and I highly doubt Tuoni is going to censor people.

Yup. If TAN goes kaput, admins/mods are welcome to "reapply" for their positions. And year, already said in the post that it's going to be pretty much the same as TAN, small insignificant differences.

You did a post a while back on how to use the GreaseMonkey addon for Firefox to block comments from certain users, while not actually removing content from the site, it's just the idea itself that is concerning that you'd go to such lengths to censor views that differ from your own and whether this might expand to full on censorship if you had full control over a site.
You need to make the admin log open as well.
Ps. I think Gmail (and possibly other mail providers) doesn't like .tk addresses, found the activation email in the spam box, never had that happen with other forums.

He didn't block Ed because his views differed from his own. He blocked Ed because he was probably fed up with having to read the endless, childish, tiresome insults he kept throwing at Tuoni in an attempt to bait him. I dunno, it seems to me that if someone wants to add a feature to their own computer that will lower their daily bullshit intake, and do so without having an adverse effect on other people's interactions on the site, then it's a matter of personal freedom, liberty and choice. His implementation of such methods on his own pc had neither a direct nor indirect effect on anyone else.

Of course, just a little concerned that it could expand beyond that.
[quote user=InSOmnIaC] But the site is heavy on gray! Surely the extra color will cause massive bandwidth increases?! How ever can we afford something so expensive?????

Big doesn't run TAN like a business, hence lack of profitability.

Not possible with phpBB I think.
I'll make him an e-mail address from my host which the site can use to avoid spam filters.

The beauty of phpBB is the sheer number of skins available and I'm not too bad at doing them myself!

Lucid Lime was one of the few that looked even remotely pleasant/usable and professional: http://www.phpbb.com/styles/demo/3.0/
It's possible to install several styles and let users chose which one they want to use. Lucid is just the default one. The installed default is there as well, subsilver.

Regardless of otester's narcissistic paranoia (gee, what a surprise) I would have wanted an open mod/admin log ... I need to ask around their forums, and see if someone doesn't have a mod or could help with a mod. It's a nice feature to have.

Gee, if someone is standing beside me shouting into my ear and I chose to put on my earphones and ignore the idiot, is that now suddenly censoring? Great logic. Next time you refuse to promptly and directly answer any of my posts, I will consider that censoring.
On the other hand, let's play!
I had 1 submission and a few comments which dealth with this Greasemonkey script, and I'm suddenly censoring? Let's have a look at your profile, shall we? Over 5,000 comments, most of which are the same regurgitated libertarian conspiracy gold freedumb theory: constantly infringing on other people's rights, blatant disregard for freedom and integrity, outright narcissistic paranoia, draconian disrespect for human life, wanting to let old, disabled, poor, and other vulnerable individuals die, murder as a method of "self-defence," probably death sentence somewhere, indirectly supporting a massive paramilitary-industrial complex, yada, yada, etc., etc.
I don't think humanity has ever had any dictator or looney evil enough to be an equivalent representation of your comments o_O

Anyway there could easily be a "submit a skin you like and we'll install it" or something and everyone can have their own look.
