Ok, so this is the redesigning I've done with just CSS... which is admittedly just colours a new logo and a couple of images. I wanted to change the HTML template to suite more shit I wanted to throw in but I didn't really know how well that'd go with Big implementing it into his HTML templates later and also having a skin chooser. Having a skin chooser is my ultimate aim cause I'll do a light version of this if everyone wants me to carry on.
If you don't like the colours then suggest something. This is a dark skin, light will in time.
So, again, not much of a redesign of the way TAN looks just a colour scheme change.
Big, how easy will it be to implement any HTML changes I do? There was a lot of stuff I wanted to do and did my best to do it with just CSS but I just couldn't. Comments, for example, I wanted to change around a lot, stick a 1px border to separate the avatar user area from the comments and stuff and move around the details in there (make it look more forumy) but without editing the HTML a lot and adding more CSS I dunno what else to do.
I had a layout done up in photoshop a few months back but I have no clue where or if I saved it, and really don't have the energy to do it all again. But basically it was the same basic layout with a small bar on the right. Entries on the left bar weren't in one solid block, but seperated into a block per topic with 5px spacing in between, with rounded corners and shadows that can easily be taken care of with CSS alone. The middle/content was basically unchanged, although a small change of beige-grey tint at the top where the topic heading was seperates it from the rest of the page/comments. The right bar was split up like the left bar, except the right bar had "Features" for every section we have, those features would simply use Big's TAN/TIN/Promotion algorithm to display the highest in each section to be displayed in one-per-block format. Possibly room for ads below.
I added a black block that continued from the comment block (was not spaced, simply added a red bar that matched with TAN's Picture link Color to seperate the two blocks, and the bottom could have all the links the top have, as well as some other site-specific links and possibly room for more ad banners. I had a little ad partner block designed out for anyone that wanted to pay TAN straight cash to have their site logo displayed on every page, would be a decent idea for making a little extra shillings.

I kept Links, Pictures and Blogs the same colours as they were ok, but the others needed changing desperately. Everything looks safe on my monitor, also, the only thing I'm iffy about is the colour for Forums. Bile green, but it's better than shit brown.
The blues could be toned down, especially the arrows and links. I supposed they are quite bright.
Also, if you read I did say there's a lot of HTML changes I want to make but it's a case of whether or not it'll be tricky to actually implement and keep track of what I've changed. One way, I'll have to log every single fucking thing, the other Big will have to trawl through my changes and do them line by line - both seem like a ball ache - having FTP access and a pretend TAN to play with sounds like a good idea imho, that way it'd be a cut&paste for big later (and big, FU, I reckon I could read your templates).
Imho, if you have a better idea drawn up get to it and post it up - this looks better than the Windows 98 grey we have going on and the first colour big come to when choosing colours for the different links (though I reckon he had just as hard a time finding one for Forums as I did)

Edit:
The original thing I posted a couple of days ago was much easier for me since it was my own code and flexible (for me) and seemed ot be much smaller than all this. It all kind of made more sense to me as well (container div, header div, nag div, latest comments, main content, footer. TAN's latest comments and shit is in a ad holder div and all that. Makes no sense to me and I'd've done everything differently... which is why it was a bit heartbreaking for Big to say I had to keep all his classes.)

Don't get a sandy vagina. I already said I had one that I misplaced and really have no bother to redo. TAN's current color scheme is as neutral as it gets, It's not perfect but it's not horrible, and it doesn't sway to one group of people's tastes more than others. That black on blue color scheme is hideous, imo. It just gives me a headache looking at it.
There's nothing wrong with the color scheme for the current area links. All that's wrong is that some of them don't play nice with the grey, and that could be fixed up, again, through CSS shadows, or relocating them to a contrasted block/bar.
Big already made it quite clear that everything is based on templates and doesn't want colors changed and classes edited for obvious reason. Changing the color scheme makes more work than keeping the color scheme and changing a few lines of code on the template. Plus those colors are just facepalm-tastic. I'll gladly take Fido's layout propositions over this anyday, and that's serious talk, brah.
And tbh, you should know by now just because something looks great on your monitor doesn't mean it will look great on other's monitors. You need to choose a color scheme that is lighting and evironment neutral. Grey just happens to be the best color for that reason, and why most websites stick to dark on light, not dark on dark.

Big didn't say anything about changing the colour scheme or the templates specifically A redesign is both the colours and the layout.
Draw something up, seriously, and I shall put it to work. You were asking me about this a bit ago. Big thinks this shit would cost money but we have the skills here in house.

No, it's not. Everybody has different color profiles set on their computer, be it manually, or be it by the driver provided from WU or Manufacturer from the monitor. It might look superb on your monitor, but literally, I cannot read a fucking thing that is inside any of that dark blue. In the world of web design, dark on dark and light on light is a HUGE no-no. You need contrast, and that's something severely lacking in this trial run, tbh.
But yeah, I'm thinking of redoing my idea. All that's happening here is a scheme update, no redesign. That's like painting your walls and calling your house refurbished with all the same furniture. Don't take any of this as insulting, it's my honest opinion, and I'm sure you'd prefer honesty over someone straight up lying and saying it's "Great!" while they can barely open their eyes.

And yeah please read where I said I held off changing any HTML until I hear from Big on how he's going to implement any changes and such because working within his list item method is going to be a massive kick to the bollocks. This si why I've been vying for access to the templates directly to make proper changes. It's ok me hammering away at HTML and then big saying "yeah, fuck that I cba adding all that" which would be dis-fucking-heartening.
Anyway, yeah I like honesty but I prefer constructive criticism better cause I've spent a couple of hours playing with bigs code and doing this shit it's a bit upsetting when someone says "fuck this is horrible, don't you have eyes?! *barf*"
I'm itching to change this HTML and move shit around :(

Just seems fucked up to me. I wanted to make the user info bit on comments much better but was limited with just CSS. If this was flexible code I would be able to use just the css to shift stuff around, add stuff and shit, but I found it impossible without breaking things.

i just check the front page, and then the upcoming.
i dont need the links to the categories right there on the left. only the tan link at the top of the page for the main one, and then the upcoming button.

tbh i agree with you, i had a headache before, but now i have a migraine.. and that other stuff you said sounds kinda like what i have up my sleeve at some point
[quote user=Matt2k35] TAN's colour scheme is ugly and the links colours and stuff are hard to see. Video, Forum and Poll are hard to see, with Forum's brown being most disgusting of the lot.

i dont mind tans colour scheme, but it wasn't planned or anything, mostly it's a case of i stole old old sws colours and then stuck bits of the guardians colours in there, then added new colours with new things. not an easy task tbh.
i didn't mean you couldn't read em, but they wont help. you have to copy paste them all into 1 html to view it, or set up a cat app, or cgi script to do it for you, which is an effort. and kinda pointless, html editing is easy, i aint need a log to find your changes, i'll do that easy enough.
i'll read the reset later

What would also be nice would be addition to the core of TAN to manually choose features and make a "FEATURE OF THE MOMENT" or something to that effect that is manually featured and shown on every page. This could be an awesome article, or maybe something with an awesome debate going on inside of it. Yeah, it may require some work to the backend that big only has access to, but I think the idea could work and spread the new visitors to different sections so there is a higher chance of keeping them on the site.
I've been thinking of ways over the last few months, and I've got some decent ideas, stuff like a floating navigation bar to replace the section links at the top. Hopefully I can literally draw it up by hand and then transfer my idea to photoshop when I get back home from work, No photoshop on my shitty laptop.
Oh yeah, this has nothign to do with the design, but Big, have you ever thought of making content sections that are exclusive to paying customers? Such as an NSFW/Boobies section (self explanatory) and Uncensored (Wide open flame room with absolutely no rules), as well as other things that might be worth some coin. If you charged 9.99 for an entire year of unrestricted TAN access, you could get enough people paying to cover most of the bills over the quarterly or annual span.
But yeah, the skin selector would be a good idea, Matt can do his theme and publish it and everyone can choose what they want to use.

I like the wooden header idea. Try those!
Get some individual images drawn up and I'll get to working these in.

which one, top or bottom? also what else do you want me to do with it? i also don't want to do anything before getting the go ahead from big or the majority of people, cos i'll spend a couple of hours on it & someone will then suggest something else. like i've said before everyone discuss & pick an idea & i'll do it.
