Why do I have windows? Apple blows. I like to play games and back when I started on games Linux sucked balls with drivers and games. So I got windows.

Agreed. I noticed a pretty impressive improvement on reliability with windows 7

Well, I most certainly don't upgrade my OS. Always a clean install there. I'll have this Windows 7 install for some time to come, though, because Windows 8 can suck a fat dick.

This has nothing to do with going to a newer operating system. This is about dumb ass sons of bitches that reinstall windows because they're having problems or have a virus. These people are just dangerous to their own property. And, even so, if you know how what you're doing with sysprep, upgrading windows works just fine. And just like debian, you'll have to upgrade to newer versions of software that don't support older kernels. Linux is not immune to that regardless of what any fanboy says.

I must've reinstalled about 6 times over the last 8 years. 3 of them would've been XP.

XP was totally fine during it's time. Vista was totally fine during it's time (All the people bitching about it were meatheaded morons that couldn't wrap their minds around UAC). 7 is totally fine during it's time, and when 8 comes out for Smart Phones, it will be totally fine for it's useage. It's not the operating system that sucks, it's the user. They just have to know how to properly use so as not to do stupid shit like *reinstalling windows*, which is just total LOL and pathetic fail.
Besides, it's just total embarrassment for someone calling themselves a "tech" to have to reinstall windows to fix a problem. There's always a way to fix something no matter what it is aside from outright hardware failure (which technically can ALL be fixed if you have the right resources, such as vacuum chambers etc).

Exactly. Virus. And or hard drive failure in conjunction with just cleaning shit out that is not needed. I have had more than a few viruses from visiting dodgy sites that require more than a 'norton' fix because they go so far as installing themselves over your BIOS and or corrupting your o/s to the point where it is no longer operable. That has nothing to do with my tech savyness thank you very fucking much it has to do with me visiting websites that are very dodgy / underground where these things lurk and the virus is hidden in some even dodgier software that I downloaded. Dont ask dont tell. Format is also useful when done multiple times (and rewriting data) to destroy any evidence of what might have once been on the computer. I have never once gotten a virus from an email or some stupid shit like that. If you have never had to format your harddrive then you're a very safe internet user who likely sticks to hotmail and your local news site.
And yes I have gotten rid of some pretty serious viruses before without format. But if its one of the malicious bitches that re-installs itself in 100 places then its quicker and easier to format than to chase the bitch down. I always have a custom windows disk on hand that I have burned with my settings (you dont seriously think I'm gonna sit round and click next during the windows install do you?) so I just pop the disk in and come back to the computer an hour later and its all done. Faster and less stress than finding the sunovabitch virus.

Oh supreme Proof. Your techiness is far greater than mine. We bow down to your aggressive bullshit Etc etc.
But yeah, reinstalling Windows is often the quickest route to resolving a problem. Only a total dickhead would sit for several hours on some inane mission to resolve a problem when it can be solved in under an hour. I learnt this lesson the last time the kids downloaded some "free app tunes mega site.exe" that contained a fuckton of virus'. Yeah, I could sit there combing through everything playing cat and mouse, or I could just wipe the fucking drive and start again. I also figured this out when I was working for a company carrying out BSF. First week there I was "wasting time" sorting out these PC's that had major problems due to the school kids installing shit on them. I just got given a disk image and told to reimage the lot instead of dicking around finding the problem.
edit:
That said I haven't had a virus on my own machine for fucking years. I only really run Avast! as a precaution.

No, it's the easy way out. It's the lame's man answer to problems. That is what guys in my area who charge 20 bucks a job do to people because they have no clue what they are doing. And this is why people pay them, then end up coming back to me because the original problem replicated itself. And by "do to people" I mean you're a threat to their computer and shouldn't be anywhere near it.
If it took you hours to figure a problem out, seriously, take your A+ (if you even have it, i truly doubt it) and throw it the garbage. Reinstalling windows are for "techs" who have no fucking clue what they're doing. If this is your default answer to a sticky problem, seriously man, you're in the wrong trade.
That's like a mechanic troubleshooting a truck that won't start and saying "Fuck it! Gotta rebuild or order a new engine!", when it's really just a very small problem that could be fixed for far less of a cost to the customer, or time charged to the company, or time out of your pocket on a contract (and this is VERY important, especially when you're the sole tender holder)
If you have all that time to reinstall windows, download/update drivers, install service packs, and all 120+ Updates including .NET packages w/ SP's, you're seriously wasting your time. You could've spent 45 minutes troubleshooting and fixed the fucking thing at a fraction of the cost. If I caught anyone working under me using a reformat as an answer to a problem that wasn't complete hard drive failure, they'd be canned on the spot, no argument necessary. In fact, when i worked for HP, a dumbfucker tried scheduling a complete superimage refresh of a machine, when it was simple service and registry issues. I canned him that day, and I got the pat on the back for doing so, because it was costing HP money, and me patience. I shouldn't have to show an A+ technician how to do his fucking job right, and when you're A+, you damned well better be as good as everyone carrying the same certification.

But, no, I've never claimed to have a CompTIA A+ cert. Reinstalling Windows is for people with better things to be doing than fixing some dumbfuck's PC and only agreed to do as a favour. I don't really understand why you're such a pissy little bitch over these things but I'm starting to come to the conclusion that talking to you about anything tech related is a total waste of fucking time (example, how much of a hard on you got about AMD's APU tech and how insistent you were it was going to shit over everything in sight - it's still yet to do that). Are you still butthurt over that fucking design bullshit? Get over it already!

I will mention again, the only irreversible situation where you cannot fix a windows installation is physical failure of a hard drive. I take it you have have never loaded a foreign hive and agnosticized a platform from a foreign registry? Because that's what it's coming off as, and if that's the case, I laugh at you, sir. You're a real knee-slapper. Don't quit your day job, pumping gas is definitely a great position these days.

Where did I ever said I do this for myself (I take care my shit, thank you)? And where i did I ever claim I work for a "shitty networking company"? I run my own small service company, I have two A+ Techs under me running the on-site jobs, and I run my contracts. Some of my contracts have barely anything to do with computers, such as the one I'm on right now, I run a sewer cam, edit the videos, create a sewer service report and shoot it off to engineers. Jobs done as of tommorrow morning, so back to the regular grind taking care of local governments and businesses.
Also, I can't force people to buy backup hardware, and I can't expect every single customer of mine to be computer literate enough to even know what the fuck they're even backing up. That's the problem, hence why these issues come to me, because they know I can fix it. Do you have any clue how many people buy out-of-the-box backup solutions and leave the default settings, leaving them completely fucked in occurrence of failure?
Yes, this is probably why you pick cotton, poor biggles.
also i kinda agree with proof, though in a less dicky mannor. maybe that's coz my head isn't up my arse and im not so big on making everyone think im better than them. probably coz i know that they know that i am better than them, therefore i don't need to try and make them believe it. i has confidence in my skills...
p.s. beezle is an accountant, not everyone works for some shit networking company proof. i say shit coz if it wasn't it'd use linux...

It's annoying and tedious as hell bringing an installation back from the clutches of death. And even when you're done, it's rarely as responsive as it would be if you had just reinstalled windows.

You could then recover a clean copy in about 5 minutes.
I'd keep a few different images, depending on what I wanted to use. Development environment, graphic design stuff, Office/School environment, etc.

I used to do that until I realized it usually took just as long to update all the drivers I had put on the image as they were most likely way out of date.
