stupid is as stupid does, that article makes it seem like the union single handedly bankrupted Detroit when it was more of the perfect storm situation. The union definitely shares the blame, but a lot of stupid shit went down at the same time. Some of it has to do with race, for example, here in chicago, we went through "white flight" where the white people moved in the suburbs, but they are now "retaking" the city.

And now we just have to look at ourselves and admit racism exists, the whites left chicago, and they bought nice houses and invested in suburbia, and they took all the spending power with them, what they left was, the poor, which were minorities. this basically turned into a crime haven. It has been now been shut down and those poor people relocated. It is being replaced with a mix of condos and some section 8 ready housing. But its basically pricing out the poor people and they are relocating to communities that are now seeing an increase in crime.Detroit suffered similar issues, but it resisted gentrification, it didn't want to let the wealthy price the poorer citizens out of detroit and it was due to race, becuase the white people had the money The wealthy whites, the ones who left to start the suburbia, now want condos, lofts, etc and to live in a metropolitan area. That money hungry union gave the labor force the opportunity to stay financially competitive, without it, they are being pushed into concentrated areas and you are seeing crime skyrocket.
