Ha, I heard rumors Harper administration is cutting 60k public positions in Canada, even going as far as suspending a large portion of their monetary compensation from their pension plan when a public servant is over a certain age. I am still waiting to find out how much of the budget our department will receive, hopefully giving me a clue if my job is safe for the next couple of months. I hear some individuals have already received notices advising them they are no longer required for their department's needs. God it's a scary situation, no one is safe really.

privatise them and let them earn their proper worth instead of inflated gov't wages they don't deserve......the market will decide what the jobs are worth, and everyone will be better for it

the oil patch has tens of thousands of jobs to spare, and then some, learn to work for your money and make more instead of having some lazy sit on your ass job, or stfu

Everything is already being privatized you douche, thanks to uncompromising Tories (always having to do everything to the extreme). And to further prove how ignorant you are of pretty much everything, I work in a branch which offer real estate services (assets maintenance, procurement etc...) all over the world, my section alone generates millions in revenues for the contracts we hold with different departments and agencies in the national capital region. The bureaucracy can really be exhausting when trying to get something approved, but at least we won't fuck up as much as those non government companies will in certain areas (health and safety for instance). And guess what, all that business is still getting transferred to private companies to oversee against experts' recommendations, even after private sectors have demonstrated a tendency to neglect due process.
less public sector jobs the better! most of them are overpaid and overbenefitted anyways
Bullshit. Public Sector workers are the backbone of the country and deserve to be paid well for their public service, from coppers to doctors to education workers to binmen!

I think you have private and public backwards matt. Public jobs are public servants and government workers, which make up a few hundred thousand. Private sector jobs make up the other 20 some million and are owned by private companies, such as Walmart.
But the problem here is that some of these people may actually be doing good things for their communities or positions, and having them leave might be more harm than good.
I don't understand how the fuck Harper gets re-elected. Obviously Canada's population have been drinking the american conservative kool-aid

Nope mate. Doctors in the UK have to work so many NHS hours, so they're public servants also! Public servants are binmen, council workers, teachers, etc. Though he's in Canada so I guess it's different with doctors there!
Which is why a lot of people are super fucked off over the public sector cuts, because it was the private sector that fucked up!

That's what I'm saying, they're public sector jobs, paid for by the taxes. Private Sector jobs pay the taxes and are the backbone of every country.

Yeah, but coppers, firemen, nurses, doctors (especially and probably specifically) are all highly paid buggers and they pay their fair share in taxes too!
And the private sector high earners avoid as much tax as possible anyway! They might be the backbone because the description is so wide but yeah, what I meant by backbone is they're the people who look after our children, health and our safety. They're the real backbone of the country that keep us chugging along!

Remind me; what happens to demand in the economy when you remove 270,000 public sector jobs?

^ Demand goes up, job count goes down, and smart men find ways to make money such as making their own work and possibly providing employment opportunities to others. The less intelligent ones go on welfare and bitch about the economy on the internet. I'm not personally insulting you, I'm just personally insulting everyone who complains about it while doing nothing to stop it, ie otester and co
Pokes aside, the only way for a country to pull itself out of a recession and get itself financially stable is to create jobs to put more money back in the system. Conservatives would approach by cutting costs at any turn, even if it meant eponentially lowering quality of whatever it's affecting. Cutting costs isn't going to ignite an economy, spending and tax dollars are. The UK govt should be doing it's damndest to make sure employers are offering as many jobs as possible. They should be giving incentives to small businesses to hire employees, or more incentives for people to open their own businesses. More money rolls in, taxes don't have to hike up. You hike up those taxes, businesses have less to live on, and people don't have jobs.
Everyone's already said it's impossible to find work (which I still find to be plain excuses, they're out there). It's not impossible to make work, and no one can make the argument there isn't enough room to open their own shop and create demand through excellent service and competitive prices. Hell, it isn't even hard to go out and do the self-employed thing. Britiain is just like Canada in that you can make so much before being taxxed, and I'm sure your ceiling is ALOT higher. This means you can literally go out and do anything and not have to report a cent to the government if that's the way you want to play it. Like I've said in the past, there's always demand for a sturdy shovel.

What happens is exactly what has happened (and what all sensible commentators said would happen). As many private sector jobs have gone as demand evaporated and growth has flatlined.

I would assume you would've made a "rule of thumb" to stay away from criticizing working people who deserve their benefits by now. Well, an intelligent person would have considering your position.

As of march 2012 the unemployment rate is 8.4%, 2.67 million unemployed, and 9.30 million economically inactive?
(ONS: http://www.ons.gov.uk/ons/rel/lms/labour-market-statistics/march-2012/statistical-bulletin.html)
Someone care to remind me what these figures were during Thatcher?
