Maybe it was because of my education and training as an engineer, and now my job with an equipment manufacturer, but metric would make life so much easier for so many people (like me)...base 10, i'm just sayin'

its not just base 10, its the fact that everything is relative to something else, inch, feet, yards, all completely fucking random
my angle was that the base 10 thing would make it easier for people to learn then the, as you so precisely put it, completely fucking random method used now. The US (and a handful of minute Caribbean islands), Burma, and Liberia are the only ones NOT using metric. I know people are steeped in tradition and etc, etc, but get out of the way-back machine and live in the now.

if u think about it, traditionalist is another way of saying dumb fuck, who in their right mind is going to pick old school pig iron over titanium forged in an inert environment.
^Stupid asshole. Every measurment is rounded to some degree. There is never 100 percent accuracy. Also imperial uses decimals more than metric usually.

1/16th of an inch is not fucking decimal, and could never really be.

0.0625 inches...?
and im sure u have no problem seeing that measurment in your head and then overlaying it onto the real world.
Edit: also lets see you scale that measurement up to the foot or the yard on the fly.
^Nope. I find imperial better to visualize actually. Although when you have to do math with it the conversions suck. All in all though it's aboot the only thing I find imperial better for is the visualization.

Actually yeah, I do. Also, most americans who are science majors have a complete understanding of the metric and imperial system.

how fucking useful would they be if they didnt know metric?
Depending on what you are measuring, rounding the 25.4 down to 25 is ok, and the decimals for the common fraction measurements are used (down to 1/32, at my job), but I usually need to check my conversion chart every now and then to make sure I am remembering the right decimal equivalent.
Drug dealers and people in the medical field shouldn't be the only ones working in metric.

hahaha , its funny cause its true.
thats what i was gonna say about your other post :D
This isn't just about metres vs inches, it is about the entire SI system vs imperial random fucking shit. Holy fuck is the imperial system fucked up! I have worked with internal ballistics equations, and holy fucking fuck was it a tornment to work with a random soup of ft·lb, slugs, inches, ergs, grains, pounds, feet, ergs, poundal. Worst of all, they didn't seem to think it was important to clearly define what units the variables were using! *bangs head against keyboard*
HUGE MAJOR FUCKING SIGH!
The SI sysem is a proper scientific system of measurement, and I will take it any day over the imperial anal and nasal rape system used in a few insignificant, backwards countries.

Firstly the imperial system isn't random fucking shit it all stems from sound maths. Such as yards being a direct division of the earths circumference. Where as the metre was just a stretch of metal they then divided into 100 to get centimetres, no real reason for that size.
Secondly there are occasions where imperial measures work a lot better than the SI, and obviously vice versa. In truth you should just work using the most appropriate scale. For example to whine about using miles and not kilometres in cars is just plain stupid, either way you're adhering to a set limit stated by your speedo. As another example of where non SI units are more suited to the situation is when talking about atmospheric pressures, it's much easier using bars, rather than 100 000 Pa.
The following is a simple problem consisting of several parts. You are allowed to solve the problem using only the imperial system. Show the definitions and steps you use to arrive at your solution.
A small-arm projectile is fired out of a bore at standard atmospheric conditions. Using the values and equations defined below, find the muzzle velocity (vm), the residual velocity (vr), and fluid deflection (δf) at 400 yd.
atmospheric mass density, ρ = 0.076474 lb/ft^3
bore length, s = 21.410 in
bore area, A = 0.070686 in^2
bore average pressure, p = 17.422 ksi
projectile mass, m = 152.163 gr
projectile diameter, d = 0.312 in
projectile drag constant, k = 0.342
a -- acceleration
A -- cross-sectional area
E -- energy
F -- force
Fd -- drag force
kd -- drag constant
m - mass
p -- pressure
pf -- fluid stress
si -- fluid velocity (crosswind)
sj -- projectile velocity
φ -- deflection angle
ρ -- mass density
^i'll get right on it, firstly though; On reading more about the yard it seems that no one really knows where the measurement is derived from. So i'll take that much back haha.
nothing is difficult about it, but when you are concerning yourself with explosions and working in pressures of greater than 20bar, its a lot easier saying that then saying 2.0265MPa is all. It's just a matter of scales as I said before. Ofc there are occasions where it makes more sense to work a SI unit than imperial.
we use a classy mix here. like we buy milk and beer in pints, and everything else in litres. then theres other things, and it depends on the person as well, like when im building or w/e i work in ft n inches, but i think thats coz me dad does.
Canada isn't full metric either, most people can't visualize height in cm's or weight in kilograms, its feet and pounds......we use km's on the road to judge distance and speed, thats about all that makes us metric LOL.

i use kilos, pounds, grams, litres, pints, cups, celsius, kelvin, farenheit, brix, baume, p.s.i, bar and probably a few others i cant remember
it can get confusing
once did a function and cooked a whole sirloin to an internal temp of 60f when it was supposed to be c.

Nor is the US ONLY using the imperial system. Really though, hounding us yanks for using anything other than the SI system is just stemmed from jealousy and a need to feel important. You see how strong and powerful us yanks are and you get jealous so you attack our unique principles that make us different from the rest of the world. When in reality most yanks have a good understanding of BOTH, in school from a young age metric and imperial are tough along side each other we just use imperial in our everyday lives.
Tuoni, I would assume you were refering to Myanmar and Liberia as the "backwards" countries, considering the rest of the world has been copying our trends or hollywood religiously for the past 50 years.

ANSWER: (highlight to reveal) [vm ~ 2723 ft/s, vr ~ 1857 ft/s, δf ~ 17 in]
OPTIONAL: (highlight to reveal) [time of flight ~ 0.536 s, deflection velocity ~ 5 ft/s]
Also, what is so difficult about 288.15 K, 1.225 kg/m^3, 101.325 kPa?
