As this new Israeli film makes all too clear, the death we witness is just the latest in an ongoing series of tragedies, forming a cycle of violence that imperils all of the characters here. The blood that is spilled ensures we’ll soon see more of the same. That kind of body count makes for a bleak and deeply troubling portrait of modern Israel. However, the fact that Ajami was made by a team of Israelis and Palestinians working together suggests that these streets don’t always have to be so mean.
