That's why the russians call it "летающий танк", the flying tank. However, it is not unable to hover, but I don't think many pilots would want to try and hover an Mi-24, it wasn't built for that and you would have a hell of a time keeping it even close to stable. Officially it is certified to hover no more than 200 h during its entire lifespan. However, a full fuel load and max out it's carrying capacity (troops and/or mounted arms) and you will have to use a rolling takeoff just to get airboure, and while in flight it is unable to sustain hover at all, without overstraining the engines. No other option than full speed ahead! Once the loaded weight decreases to safe levels, it can once again hover.
Also, the beast can take 23 mm bullets as if they were flies, and even the cockpit eats 12.7 bullets for breakfast.
