Yes, Karl Marx conscidered himself a socialist, but communism is not socialism, it is the next "logical" step after socialism. Similar, but still eniterly different.
Every time a society gets into financial trouble and huge masses of people go broke, 'Socialism' has saved the day. Every single time, people share the resources and the food and the living space. People turn to socialism naturally in tough times. And new communities born out of chaos are almost always started as communist sects. The TV show Jericho (which I've been marathoning (again) for a couple days now) comes to mind, they had a total Socialist Democracy and the town government took charge of the local resources.
